Why did Star Wars start with episode IV?

Star Wars started with episode IV because when the original movies were made there was no plan to make the prequils that came along later. The the decision to make the prequils came in the early nineties because of the continued interest in the original trilogy. In the original releases the movies were not labeled episodes IV, V, and VI. That was done later to give people an idea of what sequence to watch the movies in. Also, Star Wars was created by George Lucas not Steven Spielberg.

Because regardless of what George Lucas now tries to tell the world, the first film was a hit-or-miss low budget affair and no-one knew for sure whether it would float or sink without a trace. As a result, he chose the book from the series with the most dramatic story, which he thought would translate best to a screenplay. This happened to be the fourth book from a set of six. As it happens, the film was a smash hit success, which spawned 2 sequels based on books 5 and 6. Years later, George Lucas invented some **** and bull story about how “This was all part of my master plan. I knew it was gonna be a success from day 1, but I couldn’t commit to the first three books until the special effects technology was advanced enough”. Those of us who were around at the time, and can remember the publicity when Star Wars was originally released, know that he is lying, and his lack of integrity now only serves to cheapen the whole franchise.
