Why did so many Irish people die of starvation in The Irish Potato Famine ?

I thought most people died of disease…not starvation during the famine. But from recent (just now) reading it seems that also a lot of people left Ireland during this time and records were not great. The population of Ireland was halved, but as to how many died, historians are uncertain. There are even theories of genocide and that it was all a part of the English agenda etc.
