Why did so many famous writers suffer from depression?
Many of the famous writers became well known because of their unique stories that are grounded somewhat in their personal experiences . . .for many of them a traumatic childhood. Ernest Hemingway’s mother dressed him as a girl during the first two years of his life. Other writers like Tennessee Williams and James Merrill faced a difficult adult life when they each faced harsh criticism of their sexuality. But these writers took their experiences and were able to craft compelling stories that still resonated with a public that at its core understood pain and who craved a story that explored the dark side of humanity. While troubled themselves, many writers used their craft to write the conclusion to their stories that they retell on their own terms. There they attempt to resolve their issues within the pages of a novel or within the two hours of a play. The audience has chosen to celebrate great writers because the work reflects the human condition. We crave the writers who are broken,
