Sir Francis Drake traveled around the world, because Queen Elizabeth hired him to go and raid South American Ports. He sailed around the southern tip of South America, and began going north; possibly as far as the Canadian/American border, looking for a way to get through the continent so he could get back to England. When he couldn’t find a way through, he sailed West, going completely around the world.
