Why did Serbs commit genocide against Bosnian Muslims?
I will try and make this as short as possible, since it is a very complex and emotionally-charged debate that often invokes very dramatic language and ethnic tension. The Yugoslav Military was overwhelmingly Serbian in 1991 when the Yugoslav Wars officially began. Nationalistic political parties, such as those run Slobodan Milošević, Radovan Karadžić and Vojislav Seselj began to stir up ethnic tensions and divisions (mainly religious differences) in the former republics of Yugoslavia such as Croatia & Bosnia, which for the most part had been dormant under Socialist Yugoslavia. Serbian Nationalists (known as “Chetniks”) felt a particular resentment against Bosnian Muslims (known as “Bosniaks”) because when the Ottoman Turkish Empire invaded the Balkans in the 1500s, they began to take Christian slaves from the local populations in the Balkans (such as Serbs, Albanians, Greeks, etc.) and convert them to Islam to be soldiers in the Ottoman army. They also committed whole-scale atrocities
