Buckminster Fuller designed geodesic domes starting in the 1950s. Buckminsterfullerene, sixty atoms of carbon in a sphere, and made in 1985 by Robert Curl, Harold Kroto and Richard Smalley, was named for him because of its resemblance to geodesic domes.
