Why did Robespierre lead a Reign of Terror?
He was caught up in it and in that revolution, extremism prevailed. He had to go along to get along. In the end, it still didn’t work out very well for him. There is a famous line by Winston Churchill, in another era but applies to Robespierre, he said; “Mr. Hitler has bloodied his hounds, he must now show them sport or else be devoured by them”. The meaning being, he has the masses all stirred up and feeling mean, if he doesn’t take action, they’ll take action against him. Robespierre was in the same fix.
