WHY DID PRES. JACKSON SUPPORT INDIAN REMOVAL ACT??
– Many conflicts between settlers and Native Americans – Native Americans were living on land owned by states & the U.S. – **Jackson, because of his Indian fighting in Florida in the 1820s, had a deep seeded hatred toward the “savage” Native Americans; however, Jackson took 2 steps to help hide his hatred for the Native Americans: 1. Created the “Indian Territory” (present day Oklahoma) for all Native Americans to be sent 2. Created the BUREAU OF INDIAN AFFAIRS to help Indians adjust to their new lives WORCESTER V. GEORGIA – Not wanting to be moved, the Cherokee tribe, instead of fighting back in war like their ancestors, took the matter to court and sued the state of Georgia for removing them from their lands – Chief Justice John Marshall ruled in favor of the Cherokee; however, he could not enforce the ruling, since it is the job of the President to enforce laws – Jackson then ignores the ruling and sends the U.S. Army to remove the Cherokee from Georgia and forces them to march to t
