Why did plantation owners not allow their slaves to read or write ?
Power and dominance can only be achieved if you keep them uneducated. The Nazis did the same in WW2, if you were intelligent or a professional you were executed. Prisoners in the ‘death camps’ never made the mistake of letting on they were capable of reading more then a traffic sign. If a Jew or any other undesirable wanted ‘out’ all he or she had to do was meet ‘eye to eye’ with a SS guard, it meant execution on the spot usually performed with the hand gun at point blank range, so very few ever tried it. All this sort of rot was brutally exercised against the black slaves as well, maybe not in the same context to what the Nazis did but similar traits can be compared. In fact if you look at the history from both sides when it comes to individual treatment you cannot avoid the thought that the Nazis copied the New England slave holders in just about every ‘down trodden’ sadistic treatment ever meted out on a human being.
