Why Did Pirates Wear Earrings?

0

I was always told that the that the wearing of earring’s by sailors was a sign that they had sailed around the notorious Cape Horn. Many of the early well known Pirates had been established sailors before they turned to piracy like Drake and Morgan, both of whom had circumnavigated the globe.

It was just not pirates but any old time sailor. For two reasons 1. Superstition – When they sailed the the treacherous waters around the Cape Horn(South America) or Good Hope(Africa) the gods or angels would take them by their gold earring and guide them around the Capes. 2. Practical – If they where ever marooned or in need of finances they could pawn the earring for cash or passage home or if they died their shipmates could provide for their burial services.
