Why Did Photography Play Such a huge role in the Vietnam war?
Television and reporters from the late 50’s had a lot more freedom when it came to reporting and where not subject to Military Rule, so not only did you have the Army version of events but also the freelance journalisim seen very much more in todays broadcasts where they have a hand camera and hand mikes a get into where the action is. The Americans found this very irritating especially in the late 60’s and Early 70’s when the war was at its height and turned many an American against the war. Also Photo Journalists had the same freedom, so many more press photographs where relaeased to the papers and as censorship was further relaxed and the world was more used to uncensored images (the old gaurd of ‘people dont want to see this sort of image’ had been swept aside) and papers started there love affair with what can be termed ‘Horror’ shots.
