Why did phantom of the opera become a monster?

0

In the movie, he was beaten senseless in a circus cage and called the ‘Devil’s Child’, so his face became hideously deformed… (poor guy) and a ballerina who was watching everyone else laugh brought him to the opera house where she performed through a vent in the back of the building, and from there he became a prince of darkness. Untill he heard Christine. Christine had the voice of an angel, and he used it to his advantage in teaching her through song… and hoping to teach her to love him. He really becomes such a monster when he selfishly tries to hide her away from the world… and her true love. Hope this helps!!!!
