Why did people immigrate to canada in the 1900s?
The influx of immigrants to Canada in the 20th century (1900s) was primarily due to the war and strife that was present in Europe. The First World War (WWI) was from 1914 to 1918, but even before it started, people saw the signs were imminent of unrest and many chose to immigrate to a new land where land was more readily available and there was less conflict. The Second World War (WWII) saw a major exodus of persecuted Jews from Germany, Poland, France and neighbouring countries. The war was from 1939 to 1945. Before the war started, people were immigrating out of Germany and neighbouring countries, but due to the great depression, Canada only was able to take in a limited number of immigrants. During and after the war, a significant number of people immigrated to Canada to get away from the destruction, and to start a new life that did not involve the horrors of the war in the European theatre. Since that time, Canada has had a policy of taking in a lareg number of immigrants, whether
