Why did NAFTA fail to make Mexico what China is now?
Well, I don’t want to offend anyone from Mexico, but, the government of Mexico, and the rich people in Mexico, don’t seem to care that the rest of their country outside of their mansions … is a dump. Despite having some issues with human rights violations, the Chinese government has made an effort to actually improve living conditions in their country, and it’s worked, because life is slowly improving there as China becomes richer.
China doesn’t exactly have good human rights now. What we had hoped NAFTA would do, and what Free Trade mythology has never done, is bring their middle class up to a standard. Rather it just made 2 of the top 10 wealthiest individuals from Mexico, while their employees are nothing more than slaves.
