Why did Mussolini distrust Hitler?
Answer Linda, Good question. Mussolini distrusted Hitler because Hitler did not keep his promises and treaties in foreign affairs. Time and again Hitler said he would do something, but soon afterwards he either did not do it or did the opposite. For example, every country that signed a non-aggression pact with Nazi Germany was later invaded by Hitler. Although Mussolini was Hitler’s closest ally, Hitler’s faithless behavior must have been troubling for Mussolini and Italy. One source of distrust between the two was the problem of South Tyrol. South Tyrol was an Austrian region before World War I; it became part of Italy in 1919 after Austria surrendered. Many extreme nationalists in Austria and Germany believed South Tyrol should be returned, but Hitler alone said South Tyrol belonged to Italy. One would think Hitler’s statement would help relations between Germany and Italy, but it did not – Germany made all sorts of excuses for not doing anything to help ease tension in South Tyrol.
