Why did Microsoft change the name from Windows NT to Windows 2000?

At the press conference announcing the name change, Microsoft senior vice president Brad Chase said Microsoft’s main reason was “to make things simpler for end-users”. We’re not so sure that worked. The very first reader comment we got after posting a news story on the name change asked, in part, “how [Windows 2000 Pro] will stack up as a games platform.” For the record, Microsoft considers Windows 2000 Pro as its preferred business platform–Win98 will remain the preferred consumer (read: game) platform until it’s replaced by a future system based on the Win2000 core code.
