Why did Michelle Obama want to join Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority?
http://nativenotes.net/2008/07/14/michelle-obama-has-become-an-aka-alpha-kappa-alpha-that-is/ Congratulations to our Future First Lady Michelle Obama who was recently inducted into Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. this weekend! (Correction, Michelle Obama has accepted the invitation to become a member, she has not been inducted as of yet.) The induction will become official later this week, congrats still! Alpha Kappa Alpha has a very rich and empowering history. I myself am a big follower of their National President Barbara McKinzie and have the utmost respect for true women of this organization. Fresh off the DC scene where Alpha Kappa Alpha is hosting their 100th Celebration Boule in honor of their 100 years of Achievement. This weekend Michelle Obama was officially inducted into this rich history. Once again Congrats to the Ladies of Alpha Kappa Aplha Sorority I
It’s all speculation but The Caucaus Blog on the New York Times website summed it up this way: The wife of F.D.R. became a honorary member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, an historically black organization founded in 1908, and the group announced this week at its Centennial Convention in Washington that Mrs. Obama had agreed to join. … Black fraternities and sororities have long been strongholds in the African-American community, taking roles in organizing during the civil rights movement. Most are involved in charitable causes and they enjoy an occasionally friendly rivalry at events such as step-shows. Sources: http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.
Michelle Obama has accepted an invitation to become an honorary member of Alpha Kappa Alpha, ending weeks of speculation on historically black college campuses about which, if any, sorority she would join. Ms. Obama did not join a sorority while a undergraduate at Princeton, and Alpha Kappa Alpha, which was founded at Howard University in 1908, did not have a chapter on the campus at the time. The sorority, which also counts Brown University President Ruth J. Simmons among its honorary members, told The New York Times that once Ms. Obama is inducted into the sorority, she cannot join any of the other “divine nine,” as black sororities and fraternities are often called. But a spokeswoman for Ms. Obama said that her membership was non-exclusive. Sources: http://chronicle.
