Why did Medicare recognize the NCDR™ as its sole source of data for meeting the ICD data reporting requirements?
The NCDR™ is a national, web based, audited registry, which is specifically designed for ICD data reporting. CMS determined that the NCDR™ would collect the data elements necessary to address important clinical questions posed by the National ICD Working Group. Specifically, CMS has worked with cardiology specialty societies, product manufacturers, health plans and experts from the clinical community to develop important questions that can be answered by an expanded, more sophisticated registry. The four major questions outlined by this group are: 1) who is receiving the device; 2) who is implanting the device; 3) what device is being implanted and how is it programmed; and 4) what are the in-hospital outcomes? The NCDR™ ICD Registry ™ provides the most appropriate source of data from which these questions may be answered relative to the Medicare population.
