It was explained in the 5th book that a prophecy was made for Voldemort and Harry. The prophecy said that Voldemort will mark someone as his equal, who was born as the seventh month died. So Voldemort went after Harry, because he thought that Harry Potter could defeat him when he grew up. But when Voldemort attacked his house, his Mom tried to save Harry by thrying to sacrifice herself. Voldemort killed Harry’s mother and then used the killing curse on Harry. The curse didn’t kill Harry because Harry’s mom had sacrificed herself to try to save Harry, which had given Harry magical protection from Voldemorts curses.
