Why did life suddenly change in the late 60s?
It really didn’t “suddenly” change. Nothing “suddenly” changes. The hippies were part of a larger counter culture movement that was mostly centered among white college educated individuals. Here are some components: The women’s movement: Women did not have the same rights and priviledges they do now. Women were barred from many of the top universities, and women were not judges or ceos. The advent of the birthcontrol pill certainly helped fuel the woman’s movement. Also in 1963 Betty Friedan published the book “the Feminine Mystique”. The environmental movement: Out of this came the idea of recycling, conservation, concern about extinct animals and plants, the organics movement, back to the land, bio-diversity and the natural foods industry. Leaders in this area were many, but the book “Silent Spring” published in 1962 by Rachel Carson is considered to be key to spurring this on. Pollution was gaining in the US at huge rates.
