Why did John Macarthur immigrate to Australia?
MacArthur was an officer in the 88th foot, and was in line for a posting to Gibraltar. However, he was facing possible court martial charges (MacArthur had a notoriously bad temper). Following negotiations with the War office, the court Martial charges were dropped and MacArthur accepted a posting to Sydney instead – the War Office presumably being glad to see the back of him, hoping that such a distant destination would rid them of problems caused by MacArthur.
