Why did Johannes Brahms not marry Clara Schumann after her husbands death? Was it guilt?
Unfortunately, Brahms and C. Schumann agreed on destroying their correspondence thus many questions on the nature of their relationship remain open. Only some letters sent to Clara endured. These letters show us an enamored Johannes, while Clara’s response is unknown. After Robert’s death, the correspondence abated more and more. The notes in Clara’s diary may be interpreted as that she was worried about her place in history, wanting to be remembered as the loyal spouse of Robert.
