He didn’t “leave Europe and find Georgia”. There were already two British colonies there. Charleston, South Carolina and Fort Frederica with the Spanish St Augustine and the Castillo de San Marcos (Fort) not far away. Plenty of British and Spainish presence. James Oglethorpe was a philanthropist, a business man, AND a social reformer in England, he hoped to resettle England’s poor, especially those in debtor’s prison, in the New World. He was a British general, a Member of Parliament, and a man of means. He had campaigned for the improvement of the circumstances of poor debtors in London prisons. For the purpose of providing a refuge for persons who had become insolvent and for oppressed Protestants on the continent, he proposed the settlement of a colony in America between Carolina and Florida.
