Why did jack straw defend the theocratic government of Iran?
I have been unable to find a transcript of the speech and having stated that Elizabeth l had heretics tortured to death, I am reluctant to believe a word that Andrew Brown writes. (Margaret Clitherow was charged with treason, not heresy and received the secular punishment of being pressed to death because she refused to plead.) Persia/Iran is one of the oldest civilisations in the world and Jack Straw is the only senior Labour politician to have categorically ruled out a further Middle Eastern war against that country. This was undoubtedly the cause of his demotion. While I and many others would find life in an Islamic republic unreasonably cruel and oppressive, it is not for us to tell Iran how to run its affairs.
