Why did i bleed during pregnancy?
There are many reasons for bleeding during pregnancy, reasons other than a miscarriage. The most common reason is a minor tear in the growing placenta or irritation of the cervix. The cervix and vagina are very sensitive during pregnancy due to increased blood flow, and so any internal activity (a scan, internal check or sex) can cause a little bleeding. Bleeding in the first trimester (the first 13 weeks) has different causes to bleeding later in pregnancy. Upto 30% of women bleed during early pregnancy and half of these women have no further complications and deliver their baby healthy and fine. The most common cause of bleeding early in a successful and viable pregnancy is implantation bleeding and a threatened miscarriage. Bleeding that results in a miscarriage is often from either a fetal abnormality, a blighted ovum (where the baby does not develop) and a missed miscariage (where the ‘baby’ dies but the body does not ‘notice’ or expel the contents for some weeks later).
