Why did God take 40 DAYS to create (and give) the 10 Commandments to Moses?
a lot of people don’t realize that. By the way, this is not a Christian thing, but a Jewish/Christian thing, since it is Old Testament stuff. The Ten Commandments were listed in Exodus 20, first. That’s the first thing. But they were not, at that point, written on the stone tablets. They were spoken by God Himself to the people. This was BEFORE Moses spent forty days on the mountain. The people were so terrified at hearing God’s voice they pleaded to Moses, “Speak to us yourself and we will listen. but do not have God speak to us or we will die.” (Ex.20:19) But there is very good evidence, both in the Bible and out of it, that they were quite well known before. God told Noah that murder was a capital offense long before Moses was a gleam in his mother’s eye. The Sabbath was known before Exodus 20 as the incident about not gathering manna on the Sabbath occurs before Moses’ trip up the mountain. Worshiping God only was a clear command from the beginning. We also have Hammurabi’s Code wh
The “40 days” is one thing I’ve never had a problem with. Indeed, given the climb it always seemed kind of short to me 🙂 == The Ten Commandments traditionally viewed as the “Stone Tablets” were just the Cliffs Notes version. It took 40 days because God had to teach Moses the reasoning for the commandments (that pesky free will and all), at a level Moses could comprehend at. Then as now, humans could presumably only learn so fast.
