Why did Germany spend a lot on weapons in World War One?

Yes, they wanted to win the war. Germany came to the aid of the Austro-Hungarian Empire at the start of the war. This action opened two fronts for the German military, Russia on the east and France in the west. Germany started the war with battleships, submarines, airplanes, machine guns, and lots of small arms. The war lasted four years and almost broke the Germany economy. A huge portion of Germany’s Gross National Product (GNP) went to war production as the war continued. Keeping thousands of men in the military and fighting on two fronts was very, very expensive. Remember, they wanted to win the war. And to do so, had to defeat Russia, France and England.
