Why did Germany become a republic after World War 1?
One of the American conditions in the treaty of Versailles was that imperial Germany was to become a democratic republic and that the territories of Schleswig and Holstein that were take form Denmark in 1864 should be returned to Denmark, but only if the voters of these two duchy so wished . Before unification of the Germanic kingdoms in 1871 there was no Germany, there was however a federation of Germanic kingdoms that had its official set in Berlin, two of the major member were Prussia and Austria. After unification in 1871 Kong Wilhelm of Prussia became The first Kaiser of Imperial Germany and Otto Bismarck became riges Chancellor. Otto Bismarck practised what is known as real politic and it was his policies that made Germany the most powerful nation in Europe.
