Why did geoffrey chaucer went to canterbury?
I don’t remember if Chaucer himself went to Canterbury. His Tales, though, tell of a party of pilgrims who each tell a story on their way to Canterbury Cathedral to visit the shrine of St Thomas a Becket. Originally, each pilgrim was to have told two stories on the way there, and two on the way back. It was very popular for people in those days to visit a holy place. (Walsingham was another; people also went abroad to St James of Compostela for instance.) It served as a religious pilgrimage when a person might hope for a miracle, or give thanks for something, and as a holiday. Many poorer people would never otherwise have a chance to travel, and a pilgrimage allowed them to travel with others over dangerous territories, have company, and see sights they would not normally see. http://www.sparknotes.com/lit/canterbury… http://s
