Why did Expressionist art start?
Every movement is a reaction and often a rejection of previous trends. Sometimes these changes can be a radical departure. Often they reflect and surface simultaneously with shifts in contemporary consciousness and science. Other times they are the catalyst for change. The expressionist artist strives to convey his personal feelings about the object painted, rather than merely record his observation of it. Thus, in order to achieve maximum impact on the viewer, representational accuracy is sacrificed (distorted) in favor of (eg) strong outlines and bold colors. Expressionism is different from impressionism in that it does not try to reproduce the impression of the surrounding world; instead, expressionism allows the artist to impose personal representations of the world in connection to personal emotions.
