Why did Europeans become the colonial powers?

Plain and simple, your theory sucks and has no empirical data to support such a radical claim. Anyway, the Europeans became the colonial powers because they had the most advanced technology. Thus, they were able to sail all over the world with relative ease, and take over indigenous people using superior weaponry. As to what motivated them to exercise their power and take over much of the world, the answer is simple – economic benefit. By colonizing, Europeans had access to more natural resources, and therefore, could develop and bring back superior goods. They also were able to bring back slaves, which of course is much less expensive than paying for labor. And the people who permanently moved to colonies, such as the Pilgrims in America, escaping was a way of starting a new life and possibly having better living conditions (able to make more money, have access to better resources, etc). Incidentally, some pilgrims left Europe for religious reasons.
