Elizabeth was the daughter of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn her half sister Mary was the daughter of Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon Henry broke away from the Holy Roman Catholic Church in 1532 over the dispute of his marriage to Catherine , the Pope refusing to grant Henry an annulment of the marriage Henry resolved the matter himself, by appointing himself head of the English Church 1536. The official State religion of England was now Anglican .On Henry`s death in1547 , the throne passed to his son Edward , a staunch Anglican . On his death his half sister Mary ascended the throne , she was a devout Catholic and much turmoil occured during her reign over the question of religious doctrine . Upon Mary`s death Elizabeth succeeded the throne , accepting the Anglican Church as the State religion . She did not chose , so much as inherit Protestantism , Elizabeth clearly saw the divisions her father and sister had stirred up in England and took a more tolerant attitude to peoples beliefs E
