With 12 answers already recorded I was sure someone would hit the key points…but not so far. First and foremost because the West values its freedoms and liberties, yet every place where communism has been the chosen economic form and governmental policy it has repressed freedoms, denied rights, and prosecuted religion. Such is untolerable to most Western minds. Secondly, most in the West value the ability to work to advance themself. They (we) believe in the basics of Capitalism. If a person invests thier time, money and sweat into a business and builds it up they deserve to prosper and take profit, such is not allowed under communism where hard work is not rewarded (unless, PERHAPS, you’re party member. Lastly, it was the expressed wish to spread the errors of communism to the whole world that finally set off this competition.
