Why did Churchill want Eamon De Velara to join WW2?
Æmond De Valera could not enter into any agreement with Churchill because Northern Ireland was an undisputed part of Eire, Churchill would have had to recognised this fact before any agreement could have be enter into with the Irish. Such recognition would have cemented the the fact that Northern Ireland is an occupied part of Ireland, in short a colony under the rule of the British. If however Æmond De Valera had accepted such a offer from Churchill, then Eire would by the same token, be recognising Northern Ireland as a separate entity, and this they would never do. Churchill was probably playing high stakes, but Æmond De Valera was too smart to go along with such a proposal. The British had no need for a base in Ireland, as the British were already in the north, but, if Britain had Eire as an active ally, this would have undoubtedly given great sway in the Catholic world, and this would have been very advantageous to the allies.
