Why did Canadas New Government make this commitment to transfer 150,000 acres per year for four years?

Prior to making this commitment, only 10 per cent of land provided for under Treaty Land Entitlement agreements had been converted. As of the first year anniversary, this has now increased to 25 per cent. Converting land to reserve is a long, intensive process that does take time, but ensures that all affected parties are appropriately involved. It is a complex process dependent on the active participation and agreement of a number of parties including Canada, First Nations, the province, municipalities, and other affected interests. The Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development continues to work cooperatively with all its partners to meet the Minister’s commitment of transferring 150,000 acres of land per year for the remaining three years.
