Why Did Big River Man Martin Strel Begin Swimming the Worlds Oceans?
You see, Martin used to swim in his home town of Slovenia and in recent years was aware how the waters were becoming polluted. This had to stop, Strel believed since the waters of Slovenia used to be the last purest waters in the world (water quality of 1,000 years ago). Martin has swum the Yangtzee, Danube, Mississippi and the Amazon Rivers for the sake of the world. That is beyond admirable, heroic and sad in one movie as he conquers the Amazon River. I caught up with Martin Strel on New Year’s Day, at Coney Island before a swim with the Polar Bear Club. Q: In all the places and all the waterways in the world WHY would you do it in the freezing cold and WHY at Coney Island of all places? Martin Strel: Back when I swam Mississippi River in was in September 11, 2001. (Almost in tears) It had crushed me to see that happen and I wanted to be one with the Polar Bears of New York.
