Why did BCBSNC implement a diagnostic imaging management program?
Imaging costs have come to the forefront for employers and health plans because they have been growing at a faster rate than other segments of medical expenditures. Focusing on the right test at the right time for the right patient could save time and money, increase productivity and reduce unnecessary radiation exposure. According to data from the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association, in 2005 more than $100 billion in imaging exams were performed in the United States. A HealthLeaders-InterStudy report shows that nationally these radiology costs have risen to 10% of the overall health care dollar and are currently growing at a rate of 18% to 25% a year. According to data from BCBSNC, the utilization of outpatient, nonemergency diagnostic imaging exams by BCBSNC members increased by 21% from 2003 to 2005 and cost more than $445 million in the same timeframe.
