Why did Atila the Han crossed the Alps with Elephants?

He didn’t, but Hannibal did it to get to the other side and surprise Rome. For chin, Hannibal and Carthage knew it was the long way around but they also knew that the rich farmland beneath the Alps was relatively unguarded because Rome did not fear it’s enemies fron the west and north, and thought it impossible for a substantial army to cross the Alps. It almost worked but several capable generals were able get their legions in position to prevent the armies of Carthage from entering Rome. Carthage never expected the route to be a short cut.
