Why Dholes are known for Killing tigers but not lions ?
Think about it, there are only about 300 Asiatic lions left in the wild, so chances of them coming in contact with a pack of dholes are slim. It’s possible that there might have been some fights in the past when India’s lion population was more stable. Dholes will only attempt to attack and kill a tiger if their pack is large enough (at least 20 members), and this happens only when two packs overlap. The average pack size of dholes is 7 to 12 members, and that is not enough to take down a tiger. However, African wild dogs have been known to kill lions. “The Serengeti lion: a study of predator-prey relations” by George B. Schaller – Page 188 “Eight wild dogs were worrying an adult maned lion near the camp. The lion chased the dogs, but they kept coming back. Later they crossed the Kasompe and were heard fighting till late in the night. The next day it was found that the dogs had killed and eaten the lion.” There you have it.
