Democracy is a very poor form of government because it is cumbersome, slow, and prohibitably expensive on a national or even city-scale. This is why it never extended beyond the city-states of Greece or small communes. Most “democracies” (D) are actually “representative democracies” (RD). RDs help improve efficiencies by removing everyday decisions from the populous and giving them to a limited few. This streamlines debate and voting on every issue. Instead, people in RDs vote for someone to carry out their will in the representative body… in theory. Now American’s seem to be hooked on the cult-of-personality candidates rather than candidates accountable to their consituents. Could you imagine if a debate (where everyone who wanted to speak got to) andreferendum had to be held on every rule or law passed? We’d never get anything done in a D.
