Why declare Alcohol by Volume (ABV)?
There is no longer a specific requirement in the Food Labelling Regulations to declare the ABV of beers and lagers (as there has been in previous Regulations). The ABV is still necessary, however, as part of the name of the food in order to indicate the true nature and distinguish one beer from another. The issue is that it is the name of the food that is legally required to be precise enough to indicate the true nature of the product and to distinguish it from other foods with which it could be confused. In this respect the name of one beer is the same as another without a declaration of ABV. A brand name or fancy name may not legally be substituted for the name of a food so whilst your regular customers might tell one beer from another by the brand name, this is not sufficient for the Food Labelling Regulations 1996.
