Why create so many wallpapers when a single computer would take years to display them all?

That might be true for your computer, but it isn’t true for ours. We both use Linux for everything but gaming and Photoshop, and our machines have eight active windows up and running at any one time. Each window is devoted to a specific set of pictures, and cycles those pictures every half hour. For our current crop of wallpapers this amounts to a little less than a year before all the wallpapers are displayed and the whole thing starts all over again. Besides, we think this sort of thing is fun.
