Why create safe towns and villages?
Creating safe towns and villages, and reducing fear of crime can help to: • Improve people’s physical and mental health by reducing physical harm and concerns about crime. • Improve the local economy by reducing the cost of vandalism and attracting new businesses to the area. • Improve the environment by reducing damage to property and local spaces. • Improve the sense of local community by helping people feel able to take part in community activities. We should be careful that we consider the needs of our rural areas as well as hotspots of crime and anti-social behaviour in the main towns. How will improvements be delivered and monitored? There are many policies and initiatives contributing to making South Oxfordshire a safer place and reducing fear of crime. The action plan (appendix two) and targets table (appendix three) show how improvements will be delivered and monitored.
