Why consider LTO Ultrium and the Viper family of “Super Drives”?

0

LTO technology is the result of joint efforts of Seagate, IBM and HP to address specific customer requirements in the high capacity, high performance segment of the tape marketplace. Based on ½” linear recording technology, the Ultrium format of LTO technology is anchored by a four-generation public roadmap that provides for doubling both capacity and transfer rates in each subsequent generation. Generation 1 specifies compressed capacity of up to 200 Gbyte per cartridge with speed up to 40 Mbytes per second; generation 4 specifies a compressed capacity of 1.6 Tbytes per cartridge with a speed of up to 360 Mbytes per second transfer.
