Why Compile a Listing of VUI Bloopers?
We do not seek to compile listings of bloopers so we can criticize the individuals or companies that make them. Some of those previous developers were pioneers who worked in uncharted areas and took on challenges that naturally involve potential hazards. Despite the temptation to belittle or criticize people who make VUI mistakes (no matter how obvious they are as mistakes), we only seek to identify what not to do, to avoid further errors. We hope that for every negative observation or blooper that is identified, there is an emerging appreciation of positive guidelines for the effective design of user-satisfying voice interfaces. A blooper can either be viewed as a cautionary message or a way station on the road to defining the right way to develop voice interfaces.
