Why Civil Engineering and not Computer Science as offered by 4 of the 5 other new IITs?

A conscious decision has been made to offer civil engineering this year. (In the near future Computer science will be offered.) If you watch TV you would know how much behind our country is with respect to most countries in the world in terms of infrastructure such as roads, highways, cities, towns, buildings, bridges, flyovers, etc. To catch up our country is going through a tremendous infrastructure building and we desperately need good civil engineers to help and lead this effort. Hence perhaps the conscious decision to offer civil engineering at IIT Bhubaneswar. Also from the very beginning IIT Bhubanaeswar wants to set itself apart and rather then succumb to the “me too” mentality, it wants to be a leader in developing technologists and engineers that will build India.
