Why Church and State should be separated?
The 1973 and 1987 Philippine Constitution emphasizes that church and state should be separated. In Articles III, Sec.5 of 1987 Constitution stated that the separation of church and state should be implemented. The state or government cannot dictate the people with regards to religion or cannot instruct them on what and which religious doctrines to believe as well as philosophies. It should be like this, the state or government cannot declare only one official religion to its entire people ruling nor prohibit the practice of other religion as long as the religion does not violate the law of the government. The government cannot also endorse only one religion and then disregard the others. The government violates the “Bill of Rights” if that would be the case. This principle of separating the church and government was seen in the Bible when Jesus Christ said “Render to Caezar the things that are Caezar’s and unto God the things that are God’s”.
