Why carbon capture and sequestration?

0

Carbon capture and sequestration on a large scale is technically challenging, but possible with current technology. The rationale for carbon sequestration is to justify continued use of fossil fuels. The cost of adapting to alternative energy sources, such as biomass is much less than the cost of implementing sequestration technologies. If sequestration technology was coupled with a biomass rather than fossil fuel source the process would be carbon negative rather than carbon neutral for about the same overall cost. Edit: the cost of biomass fuel is on the order of $4 per GJ whereas long term coal contracts signed by China were recently about $7 per GJ. The lower fuel cost is offset by the need to adapt the furnaces in power plants.
