Why cantonese in Hong Kong?
Hong Kong is in Southern China, located close to CANTON where the dialect was spoken. (They are many other dialects of Chinese other than Mandarin that are still spoken, btw) In addition, Hong Kong had been under British rule as a colony until 1997, so there was less pressure for them to use Mandarin as part of China’s national language. The written language is the same as Mandarin.
