Why can you see any stars behind a planet in a space image of that planet?

Its the same reason you cant see any stars in the daytime sky but you can at night. Starlight isnt all that bright and can only be seen under low light conditions. Most photographs of planets are of the sun lit side and therefore the starlight is not picked up.
